If Oscar Barrett thought things were bad enough as it is, they weren't improved with a public message of support from former Constantine AFC 2s Captain, Herbie Glennon.

Once described by a CAFC legend as 'poison', Herbie was elected 2s boss for his second year and failed in spectacular fashion. After ignoring his team during the week to go train with the 1s, match day results were initially poor, and then he simply stopped doing the job. The 2s were, unsurprisingly, relegated that season and a new captain was put in place for the following term, in which the team achieved promotion.

Herbie remained a heavy influence in the club, perhaps the most heavy influence on the 1s Captain at the time. He was instrumental in rewarding failure in Barrett's year group, and pushed for the captain to pick his mates rather than pick who was best. Some of the mistakes which lead to the impotent President currently in place originate with Herbie, hence the unkind description of him at the time.

Despite making mistakes, Herbie's heart was in the right place. His effort could rarely, if ever, be faulted and he was a fantastic player on the pitch. Everyone has their flaws but it was clear as day, he did what he thought was best for the club. (Even when that meant training with the 1s and ignoring the 2s briefly.)

As a player, he had so much ability. It's like a wunderkind story, someone who only started playing the game a few years before university and almost immediately became the best player in his position in the club. That deserves to be repeated. He only started playing football a few years before university. As part of the most successful 1s team to this day, they finished third in the Premier League less than five years since the club was started. They were an absolute joy to watch, and his performances that year were exceptional.

It shouldn't be overlooked how impressed everyone around the club was with Herbie and his year group in general. They brought a pure attitude to the pitch of working for the team and not making things about any individual. Herbie, in particular, took it seriously from the start and, for his effort and ability, deserves to be remembered as one of the greats in Constantine AFC history.

Unfortunately, all his message of support does is further shine a light on Barrett's inadequacies. For as unsuccessful as Herbie was in the role he had, he's a thousand times the man Barrett is and would've done a far better job as President. Earning his place in the 1s through hard work and commitment in his first year has helped him become the high quality human being he is today. He's got a good, strong character, and isn't afraid to speak his mind.
